Temperatures on Jeju Island soared to 22.9 degrees Celsius on Monday, warmer than the average June temperature and the highest for December on the resort island in 82 years.
At this time of year, temperatures usually average 13 to 15 degrees.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said the heat wave was due to unusually warm southwesterly winds. But a cold air mass from the north will cause temperatures to fall again once rain stops on Tuesday.
