Electric Buses to Hit Streets in Downtown Seoul

Electric buses will start running on routes in downtown Seoul by the end of this year.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government on Thursday said it will operate 29 electric buses on three routes in a bid to reduce smog. Emission-free buses were operated around Mt. Nam from 2010 to 2016, but this is the first time they will be put into service on regular bus lines.

They will have the same design and colors as existing buses, with extra white lines on the upper part for easy recognition.

An electric bus makes a trial run on a street in Gwanghwamun, Seoul on Thursday.

Buses currently in operation use compressed natural gas, which is more environmentally friendly than diesel but still emits harmful nitrogen oxide that can cause ultrafine particles.

The city government plans to gradually replace them with electric ones after a yearlong trial run.
