Kang Jung-ho of the Pittsburgh Pirates has renewed his contract with the Major League Baseball team for another year, the club announced on Thursday.
In 2015, he signed a four-year, US$11-million deal with an option to extend for another year, but the Pirates released him for a $250,000 buyout fee at the end of last season rather than keep him on for one more year with a $5.5-million option.
The club's move was apparently a way to reduce what it has to pay Kang. It declined to reveal details of the contract.
Kang missed nearly two seasons in the MLB before returning to the club earlier this year, because his visa was rejected following a suspended jail sentence for drunk driving in Korea in December 2016.
