Investment in start-ups reached an all-time high in the first three quarters of the year.

The Ministry of SMEs and Start-ups said Tuesday that fresh investment from January to September amounted to W2.55 trillion, a staggering 47.3 percent increase on-year and surpassing the 2017 full-year total of W2.38 trillion (US$1=W1,133).

Total investment this year is expected to exceed W3.3 trillion, the ministry said.

The biomedical and information and communications technology sectors saw a sharp increase compared to the same period of last year.

"It's a global trend that more and more investment is being made into biomedicine and healthcare due to the rapidly aging population," said Park Ki-ho at venture capital firm LB Investment.
