An exhaustive search for remains of the victims of the 2014 ferry disaster finally ended on Friday, 1,648 days after the ship sank killing more than 300 passengers.

The bodies of five victims remain unaccounted for, but search officials said they will probably never be found and their families gave permission to end the search.

Workers search the wreck of the ferry Sewol in Mokpo, South Jeolla Province on Oct. 19.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries conducted three separate searches for the remains of victims since the ferry was raised from the bottom of the ocean in March last year. Remains of four more victims were found.
