Unusually chilly autumn weather will persist over the weekend before temperatures return to the seasonal average, the Korea Meteorological Administration forecast Thursday.
The mercury plunged to 0 to 10 degrees Celsius across the country on Friday morning, with 5 degrees in Seoul. In some areas, including mountainous Pyeongchang in Gangwon Province, temperatures dropped below zero.
The season's first freeze was reported at Mt. Seorak on Thursday morning at -4 degrees.
The weather will be mostly clear throughout the country until the weekend. The reason for the sudden chill is that a continental anticyclone spread from Mongolia to inland China and then slowed down, keeping temperatures cold.
Meteorological information provider Kweather said temperatures will be back to normal after Oct. 20.
