The Seoul Central District Court on Friday sentenced ex-President Lee Myung-bak to 15 years in prison and fined him W13 billion on corruption charges (US$1=W1,130).
Lee was convicted of being the de facto owner of an auto parts maker and embezzling W24.6 billion from the firm for his own use, and taking W8.5 billion in bribes from Samsung and others. Prosecutors accused him of pocketing W46 billion, but the court found the rest not proven.
The court accepted that Lee is the real owner of DAS based on circumstantial evidence and testimony from former aides who spilled the beans.
Prosecutors had demanded a 20-year prison term for him.
Meanwhile, an appellate court the same day freed Lotte chairman Shin Dong-bin from jail with a four-year suspended sentence. Shin was sentenced in a lower court to two-and-a-half years in prison for giving W7 billion in bribes to former President Park Geun-hye to win duty-free licenses.
Lotte has asked for leniency, citing a leadership vacuum since February, when Shin was jailed.
