President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un headed to Mt. Baekdu on the Chinese border on Thursday morning to climb the mythical birthplace of the Korean nation on the final day of Moon's visit.
Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom on Wednesday said Kim Kong-un proposed the outing.
The two leaders took a plane at around 7:30 a.m. from Sunan International Airport in Pyongyang to arrive at Samjiyon near Mt. Beakdu some 390 km away an hour later. There they took a car to travel to the mountain.
They are to be taken to the peak by bus and tracked vehicle.
Weather permitting, Moon and Kim will visit the crater lake on top of Mt. Baekdu by cable car.
"If the weather is bad, the two leaders may only go halfway up," the spokesman said.
Moon, a keen mountain climber, has repeatedly said he would love to visit Mt. Baekdu through North Korea and told Kim so during his April summit with Kim.
