Korean footballers are getting ready for a friendly against Costa Rica in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province on Friday in the first outing under their new head coach Paulo Bento.
Bento took the helm of the national football team last month after signing a four-year contract which is effective through the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Bento's 24-man roster for the friendly consists mainly of players who competed at the recent World Cup in Russia, including Ki Sung-yueng of Newcastle United, Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur and Hwang Hee-chan of Hamburger SV, along with a few veterans of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil like Ji Dong-won of FC Augsburg and Yun Suk-young of FC Seoul.
Eight of the players on the roster were on the under-23 team that won the gold medal at the Asian Games in Indonesia last week. The roster reflects Bento's efforts to determine the strengths and weakness of Korea's best players.
Costa Rica is currently ranked 32nd in the FIFA world rankings, 25 spots higher than Korea.
The 35,000-seat stadium in Goyang is expected to be full for the game, as interest is high due to the new coach and Korea's recent Asian Games victory.
