The record heat this summer has boosted online shopping in July by 22.7 percent compared to the same month last year to nearly W10 trillion (US$1=W1,123).
According to Statistics Korea on Wednesday, online shopping in July totaled W9.46 trillion, up W1.75 trillion from July 2017.
Food purchases surged 91.2 percent as people stayed in air-conditioned comfort indoors, while sales of air conditioners and household appliances surged 27.4 percent.
But online sales of plane tickets and travel packages rose 21.2 percent to W1.46 trillion as that becomes the preferred channel. By contrast, online sales of books and leisure services fell slightly.
Online sales on mobile devices surged 33.5 percent, bringing the proportion of mobile sales out of total online revenues to 62.6 percent. When it comes to food services, mobile sales accounted for 90.1 percent.
