Korean shoppers bought almost W1.5 trillion worth of overseas goods online in the first half of this year, especially affordable Chinese home appliances (US$1=W1,119).
The Korea Customs Service on Friday said Koreans bought US$1.32 billion worth of foreign goods in 14.94 million online purchases, up more than 35 percent on-year and an all-time high.
The sudden surge was attributed to the popularity of cheap Chinese home appliances whose quality is rapidly improving. They made up 882,000 of the purchases from January to June, already surpassing 880,000 during the whole of last year.
Purchases of Chinese cordless vacuum cleaners increased more than eightfold and those of Chinese air purifiers more than doubled.
But goods from the U.S. still topped the list at 53 percent, followed by China (23 percent), Europe (13 percent), and Japan (eight percent).
