An appellate court on Friday slightly increased the sentence of ex-President Park Geun-hye on a raft of corruption and other criminal charges from 24 to 25 years.
The Seoul High Court also fined her W20 billion, up from W16 billion (US$1=W1,122).
The court said Park has shown no signs of remorse even after she was impeached, and kept denying all charges and blaming her confidante Choi Soon-sil and her aides.
It said the heavy sentence was "inevitable" as the defendant was uncooperative in trial proceedings and turned a blind eye to the gravity of her offenses.
Park (66) was tried in absentia and was not present in court to hear the sentence.
Park was found guilty on 16 out of 18 criminal charges including taking W59.2 billion in bribes from Samsung, Lotte and other conglomerates.
The sentence was increased because the appellate court recognized additional culpability on the Samsung bribery charge, saying Park gave "tacit approval" for aiding Samsung chief Lee Jae-yong in the process of taking over the conglomerate.
