Korean football fans will be treated to a rare "Korean derby" in the English Premier League this weekend when Newcastle United plays Tottenham Hotspur as the new season begins.
The teams feature the only two Korean players in the top English league -- Ki Sung-yueng of Newcastle and Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur. They will face off in a season opener at St. James' Park in Newcastle on Saturday.
Son had a great season with the Spurs in 2017-18, establishing himself as one of the top wingers in the Premier League. He is expected to be a key player for the Spurs this season as well, which is evident in the club's renewal of his contract until 2023.
Son will be on duty for the Korean national team in August at the Asian Games and in January next year at the Asian Cup. If he continues his impressive form, he could have an even brighter future ahead of him, as bigger clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool reportedly showed an interest in him during the off season.
Ki signed with Newcastle on a free transfer after his contract with Swansea City expired at the end of last season. He expressed his wish to grow as a player under the guidance of Rafael Benitez.
