A huge sum in bonuses was given to 23 footballers who competed in the World Cup in Russia in June. The Korea Football Association paid them a total of W1.15 billion, or W50 million per player, it said Tuesday.
Eighteen coaching staff, including former head coach Shin Tae-yong, were also paid a total of W500 million.
Prior to the tournament, the KFA gave a total of W2.4 billion to the footballers as a reward for qualifying for Korea's ninth consecutive World Cup.
The players were paid varying amounts depending on their contribution to the team, with striker Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur getting the highest amount of W80 million.
