Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon met with Samsung chief Lee Jae-yong Monday at the conglomerate's semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul.
The visit is another sign of rapprochement between Korea's biggest employer and the government, which came in on a ticket of clearing out the Augean stable of big-business corruption.
Kim emphasized the role of Samsung in helping create new growth engines for the Korean economy and stemming unfair business practices. He said the government will help create an innovative economic platform through investment in areas like AI, big data, and the sharing economy.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance said the two sides discussed job creation, private-public sector cooperation and deregulation.
Samsung has been pushing for deregulation in biotech, 5G mobile technology and foreign investment and promised to invest in smart factories and work together with subcontractors, which big corporations are often accused of squeezing.
This is the fifth time that the finance minister has visited a big conglomerate after LG Group, Hyundai Motor, SK Group and Shinsegae.
