Lee Jae-sung of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors will move to Europe. The midfielder is set to join Holstein Kiel, a club in Germany's second-tier league.
"Lee has apparently decided to challenge himself in order to experience an advanced level of football in the Bundesliga rather than pursuing possibly bigger money at Chinese or Middle Eastern football clubs," a Korean football insider said.
Founded in 1900 and based in Kiel, the club won the top German league title in 1912, but struggled in the third- and fourth-tier leagues in the 2000s before being promoted to the second-tier league last season.
Prior to the World Cup in Russia earlier this month, Lee hinted at his wish to achieve his longtime dream of playing in a European league by making an impression at the tournament.
As Korea was eliminated in the group stage, Lee's dream appeared to have been postponed. But a number of European scouters approached him after the World Cup, and he chose Holstein Kiel, where he believes he has the greatest chance of making the starting lineup immediately.
"Lee wants to prove his worth at Holstein Kiel and make it a stepping stone to a bigger club," the football insider said.
