Software guru-turned-politician Ahn Cheol-soo has spoken about his plans as he takes a break from politics following a series of crushing election defeats.
Chatting to reporters in a café in Yeoido, Seoul on Thursday, Ahn said he wants to "take a break from politics and have time for soul-searching and reflection."
He is to spend some time in Germany and said he has "no plan to return" soon. But he denied he is completely retired from politics.
"I helped open a multi-party era and did my best to seek reforms over the past five years and nine months in politics. But I also left a lot to be desired," he said. "I'm going to accumulate more life experience... by visiting places around the world."
"I'll have a firsthand look at countries that have overcome various difficulties, starting with Germany," he also said. "I haven't set a time limit on my travels." He said he chose Germany because it "has started the fourth industrial revolution and experienced national division and reunification."
Buoyed on a wave of popular acclaim, Ahn went into politics in 2012 on a platform of reforming Korea's notoriously corrupt and parochial political system but soon foundered on its rusty cogs. Ahn admitted he "failed to overcome the wall of vested interest of the two largest parties " due to his lack of experience.
