More than half of North Koreans are suffering a shortage of food, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
An economic think tank under the department said in a report that 54.1 percent of North Korea's population or 13.71 million people are suffering a food shortage this year.
The department sets 2,100 calories a day as the amount a person needs to remain healthy. In Yemen, which suffers from a devastating civil war, 86 percent of the population suffer a food shortage, the worst case in Asia.
The think tank forecast that even in 10 years some 11.58 million North Koreans will still suffer a food shortage.
"Normal weather may stimulate agricultural production after three years of contraction," the report said, but added, "43.7 percent of North Korea's population would remain food insecure in 2028 even with this improvement."
