The government has started discussing how to slash the working week of public servants after the 52-hour week went into effect at big firms across the nation.

Minister of the Office for Government Policy Coordination Hong Nam-ki said in a meeting, "We can't sit idle thinking that public servants are not subject to the law."

But there are concerns that this will mean hiring even more people for the already bloated bureaucracy, which now has 1.06 million members.

It will also be difficult to limit the working hours of firefighters and police officers, while some civil servants could baulk at losing overtime pay.
