Korea failed to advance to the round of 16 in the World Cup in Russia despite an unbelievable victory over defending champion and world No. 1 Germany in its final group-stage match in Kazan on Wednesday.

Korea, ranked 57th in the world, scored twice during injury time in the second half to dispatch Germany. Kim Young-gwon scored the first goal in the 92nd minute. And Son Heung-min scored on a long cross from Ju Se-jong on an empty net.

Goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo managed to keep Germany scoreless, stopping several threatening shots from German footballers.

This was the first time since 1938 that Germany was knocked out in the group stage.

Korea finished this year's World Cup defying overwhelming odds. One British betting company even said there would be a higher chance of Germany beating Korea 7-0 than Korea winning 2-0. However, Korean players gave their all and made what had seemed to be impossible a reality.

Korea, grouped with Germany, Mexico and Sweden, failed to move on to the next stage despite its dramatic victory over Germany, due to its earlier losses to Sweden and Mexico.

In order to advance, Korea had to beat Germany under the premise that Mexico beats Sweden. But Sweden after all made it through to the round of 16 with a dominant victory of 3-0 against Mexico at a match in Yekaterinburg which was held at the same. Mexico also advanced to the knock-out stage as runner-up.
