Duty-free shops' sales in May grew 59 percent on-year to US$1.49 billion, according to the Korea Duty-Free Shops Association.

The tourism industry had been in a slump for nearly a year as China's unofficial boycott of Korean goods and services last year crippled sales of package tours to Korea. The ban has been eased in recent months.

It was duty-free shops' third-highest monthly sales. The best month on record was this January, followed by March.
