Seoul National University has elected Prof. Kang Dae-hee from the medical school as its new president.
It is the first time in 38 years that a medical professor has been elected president of the prestigious state-run university.
Kang (56) will start his official duties on July 20 after his appointment is approved by President Moon Jae-in and his tenure will last until July 2022.
An expert in preventive medicine, Kang specializes in cancer treatment and epidemiology. After receiving a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1994, Kang began working at SNU in 1996. He became the youngest dean of the medical school when he was 49.
