Volkswagen Sees Strong Performance as Sales Resume in Korea

Audi and Volkswagen are quickly rebounding in the Korean market as they have resumed sales that were halted due to the emissions-rigging scandal.

Volkswagen rose to third place for sales among imports last month for the first time in 26 months, backed by the popularity of the compact SUV Tiguan.

Volkswagen sold 1,561 Tiguans in May, easily breaking the previous monthly sales record of 1,228, while its total sales stood at 2,194 cars, according to the latest industry data. Audi sold 1,210 cars, coming in fifth in the import market.

The German brands' comeback is putting the squeeze on other foreign carmakers, particularly Japanese brands, which saw their sales rise 23 percent last year from a year earlier, while Audi and Volkswagen were dealt a huge blow amid the emissions-rigging scandal.

The hit seems to be already palpable. Japanese carmakers accounted for 15.3 percent of the import market in May, down 1.9 percentage points on-year. On the other hand, the market share of German carmakers rose 7.1 percentage points to 62.9 percent for the same period.
