The historic summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will take place at the Capella Hotel in Singapore next Tuesday, but it seems unlikely to segue into a trilateral summit with South Korea to discuss a peace treaty.
Cheong Wa Dae clings to fading hopes and is making preparations for President Moon Jae-in to fly to Singapore on short notice should he be asked to come.
A Cheong Wa Dae official said, "What is most important is the U.S.-North Korea talks. A three-way summit could be difficult to hold this time." But Cheong Wa Dae is still preparing for Moon's trip just in case. "We are making all necessary preparations," the official added.
Asked about the prospect of Moon joining Trump and Kim, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said, "A trip to Singapore, to my knowledge, has not come up, but I'd have to refer you back to the government of South Korea on it."
Meanwhile, Moon is taking Thursday off and getting some rest outside Seoul.
