Campaigning began Thursday for local elections coming up on June 13, with most candidates starting their campaign in the small hours.
Koreans will be electing mayors, governors, chiefs of local councils and education superintendents who will represent them for the next four years. Because it is the first nationwide election of the Moon Jae-in administration, the results will be a barometer of public sentiment toward the government.
The ruling Minjoo Party hopes for a landslide victory on the back of high approval ratings for the president and the party.
Parliamentary by-elections will also be held in 12 constituencies nationwide.
