In celebration of Buddha's 2,562nd birthday, temples throughout Korea have been adorned with colorful lanterns and decorations.
During this time of year, many people make their way to temples to participate in various events such as rituals or prayer sessions to wish for the well-being of their families and to meditate on the meaning of Buddha's teachings.
With a history spanning more than 1,600 years, Buddhism has become a major religion in Korea with the number of followers estimated at 10 million people.
The government has observed April 8 on the lunar calendar as a national holiday since 1975.
