A journalist working for a prominent newspaper is being investigated on charges of taking crystal meth.

Police said Wednesday that traces of the narcotic were detected in hair samples collected from a 38-year-old Hankyoreh daily reporter identified as Huh.

Police arrested Huh after a tip-off that he injected himself with crystal meth in Seoul in March and arrested him on May 1. At the time of arrest, Huh was waiting for a person he had met on an online chat site. Urine samples came back negative, but a second test of hair samples by the National Forensic Service came out positive.

A police spokesman said, "We plan to question him about possible accomplices and whether he injected himself more than once."

Since joining the progressive daily in 2007, Huh had been covering the labor and gay rights movements. In 2015, he won a journalism achievement from Amnesty International. His Twitter account has 286,000 followers.

The Hankyoreh daily has placed Huh on suspension and said in an apology on Wednesday that it "feels tremendously mortified."
