The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a two-year prison sentence for former Ewha Womans University president Choi Kyung-hee and a three-year term for ex-President Park Geun-hye's confidante Choi Soon-sil.

The verdict ends the legal battle over Ewha's illicit admission of Choi's daughter, which revealed Choi's murky connection to Park and snowballed into a scandal that brought the entire government down.

The top court also upheld the sentences of other Ewha faculty who connived in finagling the rules so Choi's daughter, Chung Yoo-ra, could be admitted despite her dismal academic record.

They are also banned from teaching at university for five years after their release. Since they are mostly in their late 50s or early 60s, this effectively ends their academic careers.

Chung herself got off scot-free amid rumors of a plea bargain. Chung fully cooperated with prosecutors and testified against her mother.

When the trial ended, mother and daughter spoke for the first time in a year and six months since Chung was extradited from Denmark, where she had been hiding.

Until then Chung had been barred from visiting her mother since they were deemed to have been accomplices in their various crimes.

They reportedly spoke about their health and other personal matters for 10 minutes.
