The number of Samsung Electronics employees surpassed 100,000 for the first time in six years, the company said in a first-quarter report on Tuesday.
The total stands at 101,951, slightly below the peak of 103,342 in March 2012. That number decreased after the Samsung Display spinoff in April 2012 and fell further after the printer division was sold to Hewlett Packard in November last year.
But a boom in the semiconductor industry caused Samsung to hire more workers.
Worldwide, Samsung employed 308,745 people across 80 countries as of 2016. While only 10 percent of the company's sales come from the domestic market, the staff here account for a third of the total as it hires many research and development and marketing workers.
