North Korea's leading propaganda newspaper on Monday strengthened its readers' ideological backbone by recalling the "juche" or self-reliance doctrine that is at the root of its isolation.
"In today's world, nothing is sillier than trying to achieve prosperity by depending on others for help," the Rodong Sinmun daily said in a front-page editorial.
"There can be no other way before us, no matter what changes will be made in the conditions and environments of the revolutionary struggle," it added.
"Self-reliance is never a temporary stopgap measure with which to cut our way through difficulties and ordeals," it said. "We must be armed with a firm ideological resolve to win the final victory with the spirit of self-reliance."
It stressed the importance of the ongoing revolutionary struggle "to completely get rid of outmoded ideological vestiges, such as the sense of dependency and the dependence on imports." It also stressed the need for the development of science and technology and frugality as a way to achieve economic development.
"We need to resolutely do away with all sorts of wanton thoughts, including flunkyism and high-tech mysticism, based on the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance."
Leader Kim Jong-un is already sounding out the possibility of economic aid from the U.S. and Chin ahead of a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump.
