Cigarette packages will carry more explicit graphic warnings at the end of this year.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare said on Monday that pictures showing the side effects of smoking will be more explicit, and written warnings for the risk of various diseases will be added.
Korea is also set to become the first nation in the world to require graphic warnings on so-called "heat-not-burn" cigarettes to warn that they can be just as harmful as the ordinary variety.
Cigarettes with the new labels will hit store shelves some time in late December. The government is also mulling over options such as enlarging the warnings.
