Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha pitched the idea of establishing a liaison office between Korea and Cuba during her visit to Havana, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday.
"Kang brought up a subject of opening a liaison office between the two countries as part of efforts to normalize relations with Cuba," said a ministry official. "Cuban officials have not clearly responded to the offer yet."
Cuba is emerging blinking into the daylight after decades of a U.S. blockade that prevented Korea from ever establishing diplomatic relations with the island country.
Kang was in Cuba for two days to attend a meeting of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. It was only the second visit for a Korean foreign minister to Cuba.
