Korea on Thursday sent its first donation of rice to countries in need since the country joined the Food Assistance Convention in January.
Following a ceremony led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, a ship carrying locally grown rice left Gunsan in North Jeolla Province to deliver 12,000 tons of the staple to Yemen, and 10,000 tons to Ethiopia.
The FAC's 16 members, including the European Union, Japan, and the U.S., pledged to donate a total of US$3.2 billion worth of food this year. Korea also promised to provide the sixth-largest amount of food aid, worth at least $42 million.
The government plans to ship the rest of the promised 50,000 tons of rice to countries in the Middle East and Africa by the end of this year.
Depending on the recipient countries' needs and domestic finances, it may increase the amount in the coming years.
