Feverish renovations and construction of new dining halls are underway at the Peace House in the truce village of Panmunjom for a historic inter-Korean summit on April 27.

The Unification Ministry is also preparing for future cross-border talks by building a new border office some 5 km from the truce village.

Cheong Wa Dae officials visited Panmunjom on Tuesday to check up on progress, four days after a visit by ministers and other senior officials related to national security.

"Renovation began last Friday," a senior presidential official said. "People are working hard there day and night."

Workers are replacing wallpaper and furniture at the Peace House and will also construct security facilities in and outside the compound.

"It's not a large-scale project," the official said. "We're just trying to make it look more stylish for the summit."

Dedicated in 1989, the three-story Peace House has a main conference room and several other meeting rooms. Its facilities have remained almost unchanged since then, except for an exhibition space renovated by the previous government.

The new border office building will have four floors and is expected to be ready next year.
