Prosecutors have decided to pre-empt ex-President Park Geun-hye in appealing her 24-year jail sentence for corruption, bribery and abuse of power, which they consider too lenient.

Park, who protests her innocence, is expected to appeal all the way to the Supreme Court.

Prosecutors say they cannot agree with the court's verdict on Samsung's role in the scandal.

An appeals court in February overturned most of Samsung chief Lee Jae-yong's convictions for bribing Park, and the Seoul Central District Court on Friday also concluded it was not proven that Lee actively sought favors from Park to ease the underhand transfer of control over Samsung to Lee from his father.

Supporters of ex-President Park Geun-hye protest in front of the Seoul Central District Court last Friday.

It added there was insufficient proof that the billions Samsung gave to Park and her confidante Choi Soon-sil all constituted straight-up bribes and instead blamed extortion by the two women.

The ruling could have some impact on Lee's final appeal at the Supreme Court in the upcoming months.
