Prosecutors are investigating three cryptocurrency exchanges on suspicion of buying Bitcoin with money they stole from customers' accounts.
The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office searched the exchanges from Monday to Wednesday, a spokesman said.
Executives and staff are suspected of diverting money from customers' accounts to their own and spending it buying cryptocurrencies at other exchanges.
"The firms turned up on our radar in January during our investigation of suspicious money transfers between Bitcoin exchanges that were detected during an audit by the Financial Services Commission and the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit," a prosecutor said.
Prosecutors confiscated computer hard disks, money transfer receipts, mobile phones, and accounting files.
They will also look into the suspicion that the exchanges raised money by cheating potential investors.
