U.S. President Donald Trump wants to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in May in response to an invitation from Pyongyang, national security adviser Chung Eui-yong said in Washington on Thursday.

Chung had been briefing Trump on the meeting of a five-member South Korean delegation with Kim on Monday.

The announcement was made at a press conference in the White House after Chung delivered a letter from Kim to Trump.

In the letter, Kim reportedly promised to halt his nuclear and missile tests and expressed hope of talks with Washington at the earliest possible date.

Chung said Trump would meet with Kim "by May."

He added Kim is "committed to denuclearization" and praise Trump's policy of maximum pressure on the rogue state.

"President Trump greatly appreciates the nice words of the South Korean delegation and President Moon [Jae-in]. He will accept the invitation to meet with Kim Jong-un at a place and time to be determined," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

"We look forward to the denuclearization of North Korea. In the meantime, all sanctions and maximum pressure must remain."
