Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur scored two goals and made one assist in his team's 6-1 demolition of Rochdale in the FA Cup fifth-round replay on Wednesday.
Son's double and a hat-trick by Fernando Llorente saw the Spurs advance to the FA Cup quarterfinal.
Coming off the bench, Son was too much for third-tier Rochdale's defense with his brisk movements and repeated shots on goal. He opened the scoring for the Spurs 23 minutes into the game, netting a goal after taking a pass from the left wing. He later scored his team's fifth goal following Llorente's 12-minute hat-trick in the second half.
Adding his 12th and 13th goals for this season, Son had his first multi-goal match since last May. Tottenham fans gave him a standing ovation when he was replaced 22 minutes into the second half.
Controversially, Tottenham had two goals ruled out in the first half after the referee consulted the video assistant referee (VAR) system, which is being trialed in FA Cup matches.
Erik Lamela’s goal in the sixth minute was annulled by VAR. Another dubious decision followed when Tottenham won a free kick for a foul on Kieran Trippier. Son slotted the shot home, but referee Paul Tierney disallowed the goal after consulting VAR and even showed him a yellow card for "feinting during the run-up," denying Son the second hat-trick of the match.
The English Premier League will vote next month on whether to adopt the VAR system.
