Hyundai's Tucson SUV has become its best-selling car in the global market amid the growing affinity for small and compact SUVs.
The carmaker on Monday said it sold 51,784 Tucsons globally in January, surpassing sales of its popular Avante sedan (48,670 units sold). The two models have vied for the lead since last year.
According to bestsellingcarsblog.com, 879,224 Avantes were sold in 2016, making it the world's third best-selling car after Toyota's Corolla and Ford's F-Series.
Sales of the Avante fell to 667,823 units last year due to declines in China and the U.S, but it was still the carmaker's best-selling model.
"Due to rising demand for SUVs, sales of the Tucson are likely to further grow in overseas markets," said a Hyundai spokesman.
