A series of aftershocks with a magnitude of at least 2.0 hit Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, over the weekend, leaving local residents in fear that a strong quake could be imminent.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said on Sunday that four aftershocks struck in a nine-hour period on Saturday and Sunday.
The KMA said there have been over 90 aftershocks since a 5.4-magnitude quake struck Pohang in November last year. Many local residents fear that a strong quake might be on the way.
"It is a stretch to say that recent earthquakes are precursors of a strong earthquake, as the aftershocks have occurred in proximity to the initial quake in November, and there has been no regular movement from the epicenter," said an official from the KMA.
