Choi Min-jeong won the gold medal in the women's 1,500-m short track speed skating at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on Saturday.

Choi surged past other competitors from the outside lane and clocked with a time of 2:24.948, 0.755 seconds faster than runner-up Li Jinyu of China. Kim Boutin of Canada won the bronze medal with 2:25.834.

In the 1,500-m race, competitors are required to skate 13.5 laps of the 111.12-m-long track. Choi was in fourth place with four laps remaining. With three laps to go, she stepped up her race, skating around the other competitors from the outside lane to take the lead. With two laps to go she was way ahead despite skating a greater distance.

In the 500-m final earlier last week, Choi came in second but was disqualified for impeding Boutin. However, she put her disappointment behind her to turn in an impeccable race to claim a gold medal in the 1,500 m.
