A U.S. naval leader last week claimed the aim of North Korea's nuclear weapons program is to turn the Korean Peninsula into a communist nation.
Adm. Harry Harris, the chief of the U.S. Pacific Command who has been named by U.S. President Donald Trump as ambassador to Australia, was speaking to the U.S. House Committee on Armed Services last Wednesday.
He said he disagrees with the prevailing view that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is developing nuclear weapons to safeguard his own regime.
Instead, he claimed Kim is pursuing "reunification under a single, communist system" that neither his grandfather Kim Il-sung nor his father Kim Jong-il achieved.
"While some might dispute both the reliability and quantity of the North's strategic weapons, it is indisputable that [Kim] is rapidly closing the gap between rhetoric and capability," Harris said.
"Now the shadow," with which South Korea and Japan have lived for years, "looms over the American homeland," he added.
