Some 114 schools across the country have only one or no new pupils this year amid a record-low birthrate.

Education offices of cities and provinces nationwide reported that 55 schools will not have any new students at all this year and 59 only one.

Gyeonggi and North Gyeongsang provinces each have 13 schools with no entrants, followed by Gangwon Province with eight and South Jeolla Province with seven.

Twenty-eight will be shut down this year, including nine in South Gyeongsang Province, four in Busan, and three each in North Gyeongsang Province and South Jeolla Province.

According to the Education Ministry, from 1982 to March 2017, 3,683 schools closed down across the nation.

The number of small schools with fewer than 240 pupils rose from 55 in 2010 to 103 last year due to the decline in student numbers.
