The woman, a resident on the ninth floor, had been trapped by doors destroyed by the quake. She was unhurt and alert.

The quake occurred on the ocean floor 22 km northeast of the Hualien County government building at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday at a shallow depth of 10.6 km.

Hualien is famous for the Taroko Gorge and its beautiful beach. Some 250 big and small aftershocks continued all day Wednesday.
