The father of Otto Warmbier, the American student who died a week after being sent home in a coma from North Korea, will attend the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as a guest of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.

Fred Warmbier declined to answer questions about his itinerary from the Chosun Ilbo.

The White House invited Warmbier and a North Korean defector to U.S. President Donald Trump's State of the Union address at Congress on Jan. 30.

Trump met eight defectors at the White House last Friday, and Pence invited Warmbier to the Olympics opening.

The aim is to highlight North Korea's egregious human rights violations and put pressure on the regime.

Otto Warmbier has become a symbol for the fight against North Korea's human rights abuses. Fred Warmbier hired a lobbying firm in Washington in November to seek further sanctions against the regime and put the rogue nation back on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, which happened some months later.

A North Korea financial sanctions bill dubbed the "Otto Warmbier bill" is also pending at Congress.
