North Korea on Thursday demanded a halt to joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises and the deployment of strategic American weapons in the South.

The demand came just two days after the two Koreas met for the first time in two years and agreed that North Korean athletes will take part in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

It looks as though North Korea is already presenting a laundry list of demands for agreeing to take part.

"If the South Korean authorities really want detente and peace, they should first stop all the military acts they have waged with the U.S. against their brethren," the official Rodong Sinmun wrote.

"The two Koreas cannot remove mutual distrust and confrontation, and move toward unification, under persistent military tensions."

The joint exercises, which usually take place in February and March, are already being postponed till after the Olympics, but North Korea is demanding a permanent halt.

The Rodong Sinmun also demanded that the U.S. and South Korea halt "nuclear war exercises," referring to American nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and B-1B strategic bombers that have been deployed near the Korean Peninsula to thwart a possible North Korean attack.

Pyongyang is expected to make the same demands in the upcoming military talks.
