"The Handmaiden," directed by Park Chan-wook, has been nominated for Best Film Not in English at the prestigious British Academy Film Awards for 2017.

It is the first Korean film ever to receive a major category nomination at the competition.

"The Handmaiden" was inspired by the British novel "Fingersmith" and received critical acclaim in the U.K. It was invited to the official competition at the 2016 Cannes International Film Festival.

Other foreign films nominated include "Elle" by French director Paul Verhoeven, "First They Killed My Father" by Angelina Jolie, who also starred, "Loveless," the winner of the Jury Prize at last year's Cannes directed by Andrey Zvaginstev of Russia, and "The Salesman" directed by Iran's Asghar Farhad.
