Hyundai unveiled its next-generation hydrogen electric vehicle at a press preview on Monday, a day ahead of the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which runs until Jan. 12.
Hyundai claimed its Nexo boasts higher performance than other hydrogen vehicles currently available on the market, including Toyota's Mirai, and can run 600 km with a single charge, which takes just five minutes.
It is also equipped with state-of-the-art technologies for safe driving.
Hyundai is taking a two-track approach toward both electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. It sees demand for electric vehicles for shorter distances and hydrogen cars for longer journeys.
"We expect increasing demand for hydrogen cars in the future, as they will be able to cover 800 to 1,000 km with just one charge," Hyundai Motor Vice Chairman Chung Eui-sun said.
Hyundai also announced plans to collaborate with start-up Aurora, founded by self-driving car superstars from Google, Tesla and Uber, on commercializing completely automated driving.
