Boxing Champion to Work on Strengthening Ties Between Seoul and the Philippines

      Boxer-turned-politician Manny Pacquiao was named a promotional ambassador by the Seoul Metropolitan Government on Tuesday.

      The city government has appointed renowned global figures and professionals as part of efforts to diversify cooperation with major cities around the world and promote Seoul.

      The Filipino will play a role in boosting cooperation and strengthening ties between Seoul and the Philippines.

      Pacquiao was born into a poor family and had a difficult childhood in the slums of Mindanao, the second-largest island in the Philippines. He started competing in professional boxing in 1995 and won the world titles in eight different weight divisions, a feat that has yet to be matched.

      Pacquiao was elected as a senator in the Philippines in 2016 and will serve a six-year term until 2022.
