Exports of seasoned laver surpassed US$500 million in value this year, the highest ever, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said on Tuesday.
Seasoned laver exports have risen more than eightfold in the past decade. They were a mere $60 million in 2007, hit the $100 million mark in 2010, grew to $353 million last year and exceeded $500 million this year.
The performance is thanks to efforts to expand exports with new product development, outdoing rivals China and Japan.
Korea currently exports seasoned laver to 109 countries, up from 49 in 2007. China, Japan the U.S. and Thailand are major importers, while Europe is a recently emerging market.
